Primary 1 at the Royal Mile

Easter Fun and some goodbyes

In the last two weeks of term we've been learning about the story of Easter and how Christians celebrate. On the last day of term we had a wonderful time, making chocolate nest cakes, and writing posters with messages for the Easter bunny. In the afternoon, we had an egg hunt in the playground.

This was the last day for some of the children who are moving on to new schools, as is Mrs Sutherland too. Miss Grant will be the new P1 teacher in April, and everyone at the Royal Mile welcomes her. We are also very lucky to have Miss Gordon, a PGDE student who is with us for her final placement.

Mrs Sutherland has had a wonderful time at the Royal Mile, and leaves with lots of fabulous memories of all the staff, parents and children.

World Book Day

We had a wonderful day, celebrating books on the 4th of March. The pictures show us reading with our buddies in P5/6. In the afternoon, we had a book themed activity afternoon, which involved making and sharing books, story activities and even book themed baking!

Chinese New Year

This week we will be learning about Chinese New Year, and the customs and celebrations that happen at this time. Every year is named after an animal, and 2010 is the year of the tiger. You can find out about how the years were named here.

Our daffodils have grown!

We planted bulbs back in October, and now with some tender loving care, we have these beautiful daffodils! We were given all the bulbs, pots and soil by Marie Curie to participate in their 'Little Pots of Care' fundraising event.
All the children have now taken home their daffodils and an envelope to collect donations for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

This week, we have been learning about vowel sounds, and have been writing and playing games to learn about the sounds ai and ay.
We have been learning the names of some capital letters, and love this song about capital I.

People Who Help Us

We've started a new project to learn about people who help us. We have made huge pictures for our wall of some of these people. We had to think about the clothes and equipment these people use. The children drew around each other, painted and stuck things on, then wrote labels. Aren't they great?

Parachute fun

Unfortunately, due to an icy playground, we've had to stay indoors quite a lot since we started back after the holiday. Primary 1 have been working very hard revising their phonics, reading, writing and number work so as a treat we went to the hall this afternoon to play parachute games.

Today Primary 1 were learning how to click and drag with a mouse, to move objects around the computer screen. We decorated Christmas trees, and solved Rudolf and snowman puzzles. The children were fantastic at working with a partner to share the mouse, and are now able to use the mouse really well.

Presents

The children thought about presents they would like, and drew pictures of them. The children also wrote the names of their presents all by themselves! What fabulous writers we have in Primary 1!

Preparing for Christmas - Decorating our classroom

We have a Christmas tree in our classroom, and some of the children wanted to make decorations. As you can see, two girls made a beautiful star for the top, and some fabulous paper chains have been added.

The Golden Tree

Our golden tree has now grown leaves and apples, because the children earned enough stickers on their flowers. Now we are collecting our stickers and putting them on the owls which live next to the tree. What will grow next on the tree?

Today we looked at pictues of paintings by Wassily Kandinsky.
This is what the children said:

The children gasped at this one - they said it was colourful and nice.
Each child got a square piece of paper and tried painting their own circles. We're going to put them all together to make our own masterpiece!

This week we have been revising the letters we have learned this term, by singing our sound songs, practising writing them, and making words with them.
This term we have learned the letters s, a, t, p, i, n, d, h, e, m, o, and g.
We have listened to lots of nursery rhymes to help us be able to listen to rhymes which helps us be able to hear the sounds in words.

At home, it would be great if children could listen to more nursery rhymes, and lots can be found here:

If children are able to hear and identify rhymes, it helps them to write their own. We have tried making these rhyming words with magnetic letters:

It's quite tricky! Primary 1 are a very clever class!

Fire Safety Visit

We had a visit today from the Fire Fighting team from Tollcross fire station, to tell us about firework safety. We learned that we must always use gloves if we are holding sparklers, and never to pick up sparklers if they fall on the ground. We know that we must never touch any other fireworks.

Planting daffodil bulbs

On Wednesday, each child in Primary 1 planted a daffodil bulb into a pot, and we will care for these over the winter months, ready for them to grow next year.
This is for a fundraising activity for Marie Curie nurses, called Mini Pots of Care.

This activity will help the children understand the importance of care, and help raise some money for the Marie Curie nurses. Once the bulbs grow next February, the children will bring home envelopes and ask for a small donation.

French Lessons

Bonjour! We have started having French lessons every Monday afternoon with Mrs Mathevet. She has been signing wonderful songs, telling us stories and bringing toys and puppets to help us learn some French words.

Baking Bread

Today we baked our own bread. We followed a recipe and used flour, yeast, water and a little salt and sugar. First we mixed the ingredients into a dough, then we kneaded it, and rolled pieces of the dough to make rolls. We left the dough to rise then Mrs Sutherland put it in the oven. We had such fun eating our rolls with some butter and jam that Mrs Sutherland forgot to take pictures! The children said it was tasty and delicious!

Keeping Healthy

We looked at this story today. It's about a little girl who has a cold, and her big brother tells her this is because of germs. We wash our hands before we eat at lunchtime, and try to remember to cover our mouths when we cough or sneeze.

This afternoon we went to the ICT suite - this is a room full of computers. We worked with a partner to try playing a game about germs. We are learning to hold the mouse properly, and to click and drag to make things happen.

We enjoyed the ICT suite so much that we stayed for a bit longer to draw pictures on the computer too.

Autumn

We have a new autumn tray to play with, with some woodland creatures, so that we can have fun playing and talking about autumn.
We've been talking about harvest time, and looked at some pictures of wheat. We tried making our own pictures, using warm autumn colours for the sky. Tomorrow we're going to learn more about what wheat is used for, when we make our own bread!

Going for Green

We are now following our school's positive behaviour policy. We have a picture of traffic lights on our wall with everyone's names on the green light. If the children's behaviour is not what it should be, their name is moved to a yellow light, and the child is given a target and support to get back to green as soon as possible. Children who stay on green all week will bring home a very special sticker every Friday.

Our Golden Tree is filling up with leaves! Everyone in the class has collected lots of stickers, and the children have all earned a golden leaf. Soon we will have 2 golden leaves each! What a super class primary 1 are!

The Golden Tree in the Golden Garden

In Primary 1, the children decided that we should follow some Golden Rules, and chose what they should be. When they are good at keeping the Golden Rules, Mrs Sutherland and Mrs MacCairney give the children stickers. Each child has made a flower to keep their stickers on, and these flowers are in the Golden Garden, beside the Golden Tree. When the children get 10 stickers, a Golden leaf with their name will be added to the tree. Keep checking our blog to see the leaves appearing on the tree!

We made a poster for our classroom door, and thought about what should be on it. We decided to put on a photograph of all the children, and some of us thought of things to say, which Mrs Sutherland added to the picture.
